  • RAID on server/workstation URGENT

    Hi all

I'm about to build a new server/workstation and would like some comments on the following 2 options.

    1. Two raid 0 sets with 4 drives. 1 Set for OS and programs and 1 Set for work and library.

    or

    2. One raid 0 set with 4 drives with everything on it?

    Kind Regards,
    Morne

I can't imagine why you would want to have anything valuable on a RAID 0 set - if one drive fails, you've lost everything. If you're after speed move up to SAS drives (or even 10k rpm SATA drives). If you want to make sure you don't lose anything you'll have to consider RAID 1 or better.

I have used a number of configurations over the years, but I primarily use high-speed drive/RAID setups for working files and scratch disk space (working files getting backed up daily to another drive) and used redundant RAID configurations for the backup and for OS and programs. That way the stuff you need speed for is fast and the rest is safe.

I still do that, although I now use a Drobo on the network for backing working files everyday. It's slow as hell but pretty bulletproof and dead easy to setup.
