  • MAX display driver and VRay. DX9, DX10 or OpenGL

    Hi all

With SP2 is the display issue suppose to be sorted out now with DirectX? I mean previously DX just gave me endless problems and OpenGL was my friend. However apparently they're making max so any "game pc" can run it.

I'm using Vista 64Bit and would just like to know if it is safe to use DirectX 9 or 10 as my display driver as it is apparently faster than OpenGL. (But as mentioned OpenGL was my friend in the past)

I'm using an ATI 2900XT graphics card.

    Kind Regards,
    Morne

Well, OpenGL is still my friend too
I've spent endless hours on tuning drivers for my QuadroFX3000 to get the directX to work in max. No luck so far. The same results after upgrade to max2008 and Vray SP2. OpenGL seems to be my only working option... (btw for me the directX works for about 2min then crash)

Bobo and others have stated multiple times on cgtalk.com that directx is the only way to go because OpenGL hasn't been updated since max version 5. I've found for compatibilty opengl works great for opening old scenes that won't open with directx, but creating new scenes with directx there are no problems here.

I'm not clear on the question. When you refer to service pk 2 are you talking about vray or max...and which max are you talking about?
I'm on max 2008 with vista 64 bit and ogl is the only thing that works on my quadro fx 3500.

I believe there should be no problems with SP2 and DirectX. In the unlikely event that you still have issues, you can disable support for the viewport textures of VRayMtl (which is where the problems came from) by creating an environment variable called "VRAY_SHOW_MTL_MAPS" (without the quotes) with a value of "0" (again without the quotes).

              Best regards,
              Vlado
