  • Max 2008 Refund or feedback

    Its me again!!

Just a thought but how about a concensus on getting a full refund on the joke that is max 2008, or a guarantee that fundamental 'fixes' are made free of charge in the next release.

I thought it'd be interesting to do a quick poll here on Chaos - won't yeid anything I'm sure but worth it for effect as numbers can count for much.

Perhaps you could also add to my list of unacceptable issues with the software. I can then collate and forward on.

So far I've had problems with the following (some of which is not unique to 2008 ) but are in my view fundamentally unacceptable:

    1. The new scene selection dialogue (fire the programmer and get rid of it) just rubbish in so many ways - slow/selected objects disappear when selecting different filters etc etc...
    2. Spline booleans - dont work
    3. geometry Booleans - dont work
    4. Backward compatibility - at least give us this to two versions.
    5. Graphics Drivers OpenGL/Direct3d - range of problems even on a top end pro card with the latest drivers, such as textures not showing at all, or crashing out with no warning.
    6. Display background dialogue - numerous issues including 'jumping' between lock and unlock, and no image being displayed.
    7. Backburner issues - most importantly lets allow it to render even if one or two maps cannot be found. V simple to implement.

There are many other issues but I thought I'd start this thread with the most fundamental.

    ................Lets stand and be counted!

Get the impression you're not loving the new version of Max? Is this only your second thread or have the worlds other forums felt your fury too!

I agree with you though, ive noticed a few really, really annoying changes with 2008. Mainly the object selection box which is, to put it technically more irritating than stepping in dogsh*t.

The other guys in the office don't seem to mind the new object selection box. I couldn't stand how slow it was, so reverted back to the old one. I'll see if I can dig up the directions on how to revert it back for you.

        Here ya go:

        Go to this ini file:

        C:\Documents and Settings\<<username>>\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2008 - 64bit\enu\defaults\MAX\CurrentDefaults.ini

where <<username>> is your windows user name

        and change:

          Max 2009

I haven't had any problems with 2009. I also don't like how slow that select is so I'll look into reverting back as suggested.

No problems at all with it (beyond the usual little things that
all software loves to annoy with).

You can add the following to your list of gripes :

Pflow - Clicking on an operator icon to switch it on or off causes a crash nine times out of ten.
Pflow - Layer visibility bears no relation to what layer a pflow, or its emiter, or shape instance is placed in.
Medit - Random crashes if you replace materials in a multi-subobject.

              you are not alone
              Many Thanks

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!!! We were really getting redfaced from frustation when pressing that damn selection button. Now it is fast again, so cool!!! From all 4 of us!!

                  Just FYI:
If you use the MAX.vray default settings you need to add the lines

                  [Scene Explorer]
                  SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=0

to the CurrentDefaults.ini file in the ...\enu\defaults\MAX.vray\ folder instead of modifying the line in file in the \MAX\ folder.

                    2009 vrayrender elements on splitscanline

                    i have this problem.
if i use netrender and splitscanline, maxdesign2009 completes the main rendering but ignores added elements, standing only on the very first stripe.

I won't say that max2008/2009 hasn't got any bugs, but I'd like to mention that boolean also didn't work in previous versions, ProBoolean is better, but not yet perfect too.
You shouldn't need booleans anyway, as long as you can model...
No idea what didn't work with your spline booleans, but over here they're working fine...
Graphics...max is made for direct3d/directX at this moment, so any videocard that can support directX would work, and especially topcards like an Asus Nvidia 8800GT 1Gb...
(Quadro cards aren't that much topcard...the 8800GT is faster then the quadro fx5400...and costs about 1/12 of it..)

I'll stop here...as I said, max ain't perfect, I know that too, I'm working with it for long enough..
