In MAX is there a way to move a bunch of vertex's to the same Z? I have a site that I would like the parking lot to be flat.

go into sub-object vertice mode and hit F12 to get the floating bar, select the scale tool in which you can control the scaling individually and scale on Z to 0. Reset the xform and bingo.

There's also always the "Z" button next to "Make Planar" in the edit poly modifier.

oh, for whatever reason I assumed he needed to do it with a spline. Guess I read into it too much.

Ha, ha - looking back on it after you mentioned a spline I think you're right.

it is a plane.... I'll try the "Make Planar" next time, but the xform did work for me.

the purpose of the xform reset is so that your extrusions on a spline go in the correct direction.

                  Z

Then the scaling the z was the key. I was selecting all my points and trying to move them all to the same Z. I didn't think of scaling the Z and I really don't understand why it worked, but it did.

When you used the Make Planar button in Editable Poly mode, you can right click the scrollers next to the Z World input field (in the Move Transform Type In; F12).

The transform type in is also at the bottom of the screen next to the playback controls.

Keep in mind that the Make Planar X, Y and Z are relative to object space, not world space. If you object is rotated, you will have to use the appropriate axis or you can use the Reset Xfrom utility to align the axis to world then collapse.
