working as a freelancer what AJ_23 suggested is absolutely the only way to go!

first rule: no garbage in general means no garbage out, so keep it outside!!!

    my standard workflow is:

    1. xref dwg file provided by client (typically a messy one) to a new and clean dwg
    2. move it near 0,0,0 as you like it and scale it to correct units
    3. redraw only the more important lines (often you will discover that they are only a few of them); using cad for me is a lot faster and accurate then max
    4. import that lines in max and start modeling
    5. if I need more lines, I go on drawing and then I block a new file with only the new ones and re import in max and so on

probably working as 3d artist embedded in a large firm could suggest a different way to go but not as a freelancer

    hope it helps
    Alessandro
