Video Card Recommendation

Mine is 8800 gts, giving me BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH all the way, and want to change to another piece, any suggestion or advise? how about 280 gtx, or even quadro 570 or 1700?

I have exactly the same card and it runs fine. Before you fork out more money on another card, it may be worth updating your drivers and checking out which viewport rendering method you are using in 3dsmax....

I have the ATI FireGL V7350 1GB. Once I moved to Max 2008, it outperfromed either of the Geforce or Quadro cards we have.

Also, even though a professional card, it is an unbelievably fast card for certain games, such as HL2. However, other games such as Crysis, don't like it too much. I think some games are written specifically biased towards Nvidia.

I recently bought the geforce 9800gtx top, and like it a lot.
it even seems faster than my quadro card at work, at least for shaded views.

i suggest you let people know what OS you are operating from and how many monitors you are supporting and the size of the monitors. it all makes a difference. One guy will say his card works great but put that in a different setting and it bombs. 64 bit, 32 bit, etc....all make a huge difference.

Takes one PCI slot with two 9800 cards in SLI and HDMI output.

Fast, nice and needs lotsa power 650w psu absolutely minimum.

We've got these as well. Never had great results in Max9, but we've reinstalled and are now in Max2009 64bit and it seems to be working a treat. Direct3d in Max and Opengl in ADT.

You can always do with more speed though!

I'm using the ATI FireGL V5600 on vista x64 and 3dsmax9 64bit.
Never had a videocard that was so stable, this card is rocksolid and fast, for a fair price.

Drivers are certified for all major 3D apps, so you get a proffesional 3D card for the price of a "game-card".

@ tricky: So you went from 9 to 2009? I did 8 to 2008. Similar reason though: As I understand it, in Max2008 the viewports were revised to be much more DirectX friendly. As ATI professional cards are more Direct X oriented than Quadro, they became much faster in Max. One would expect a similar boost on the Geforce cards, but I haven't noticed any.

Similarly, before 2008, SLI didn't work with Max, and as I've heard, now it does.

@ marco: Which games? As I mentioned my FireGL is a rocket with HalfLife2, maximum settings. However with Crysis, it only runs well on medium settings and resolution. However at home I have the 8800GTX and Crysis runs perfectly at maximum settings. The only significant difference is at home, I'm on XP32... work is XP64

I also *think* the new wave of FireGL cards support DX10, so not sure how that might affect things.

@Clifton: sorry, I was talking about 3dsmax viewport performance. I don't know if the V5600 is fast in games because I don't play games (anymore).

here is my 2 cents:
Im running a 8800 gtx on one worstation...a 800 dollar card in its time, and i bought a geforce 9600 overclocked to 1.8, 200 dollar card and its on the same level if not better in max and maya.

after reading this, i am leaning towards the ATI like clifton said, how much was it ?

the firegl V5600 is aproxx. 420 dollar in the US.

I'm all about the Quadro cards using the maxtreme drivers. I have yet to see anything outperform them, IF you're using the maxtreme drivers. If not, then they actually kinda blow.
That's the only sucky part really because the maxtreme drivers take a few months sometimes to be released. Although, most serious people take a few months to transition to the newest max release anyway, so no biggy.
