  • modeling this cage filled with rocks

    hi guys,

I've to model something like that
    http://www.scherf.at/index.php?article=79

At the moment I've tried modeling the cage with splines and the rocks inside each cage using simply a box with 3d displacement with a cellular map applied (bercon noise); it's not bad but I would like to try with something else, maybe better. For example I would like to learn how to fill a box with geometries, I've tried with scatter object but I cannot find a way to avoid geometries overlaps; maybe another way could be using particles? or what ever? how to manage collisions among rocks?

    any suggestion to share?

    thanks in advance
    Alessandro

    Could use reactor...
Place lots of geometry on top of the open box and let them drop.. they'll stack

I hope someone could share this model, It can be useful for me too

reactor it's pretty straightforward, to let a bunch of objects fall in a box I guess you don't have to go any further than max's help files.

good to konw, I've just switched to max design coming from viz so for me all those bells and whistles are still a mistery, probably the time has come to learn something new

I'm with you Zeronove, I just moved from Viz to Max Design as well. Only the other day I decided it was time to try and master reactor but Max design does not seem to ship with any reactor tutorials and I found it very difficult to find any up to date relevant tutorials online.

On the rocks issue I have completed a project where we used gabion walling. I'm not sure it will be up to the detail you require as my version was only getting viewed from a distance (as attached).

and the mat I used was this

                http://www.gregsteel.pwp.blueyonder....abionfiles.zip

Hope it helps or gets you started anyway

There is a material on the Maxwell site for this. It may provide some useful guideslines/maps:

thanks a lot, but the zip file seems corrupt, can you check it?

about the reactor tutorials, I've found something on youtube as videos, not really updated but enought as starting point

I'm with everyone else....drop the rocks in a box or use pflow to fill the volume. Then use a lattice modifier on the box mesh that is holding the rocks.
