An unconfirmed source stated that this is in following with their long tradition of innovation through aquiring competing product lines. "Why fix our own product lines, when we can just buy someone elses?"

Houdini and Cinema 4d at opposing ends of the market,
Lightwave (is it still much used these days?), cheap hobby software.. any others?
there needs to be anti-monopolistic legislation from the UN !
