  • Backburner 2008.1.0.270 Queue Monitor Shortcut Image Opening

We just upgraded our farm to Max2009 Design and Backburner 2008.1.0.270. I just noticed that shortcut opening completed frames via the Queue Monitor no longer works as it did in previous Backburner 3.0. 2. What I'm talking about is the ability to double click a completed task in the Task Summary list and the image open in your default image viewer. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've tried turning OFF firewalls and virus protection and still no luck.

    Thanx in advance!

wow if that is your only problem after upgrading backburner I would thank your lucky stars!

We have hundreds of workstation/render nodes. Software installation is handled with group policies and scripts. We have had endless headaches removing the old BB and distributing the new one. We would jump to deadline if it were not so expensive.

Hundreds of nodes - I'm jealous!!
We have around 30 nodes so is still a PITA but scripting things helps out a bunch. Most important item when installing new BB is to make sure any old version of BB is uninstalled - this means EVERYTHING!!! Including the "Network" folder left behind. There are a few other bugs, like not pointing the server to the Manager machine - must leave it's default local name and somehow magically finds the Manager! But other than that it seems to be working OK....at least for now

I haven't heard the default local server setting issue. I wonder if our installation scripts address that...

Yes we have many nodes. The downside is that there are so many different setups out there; hardware and OS combinations. The two different Program Files folders make things all the more complicated.

Also to be clear, the majority of our nodes are employee workstations. We have about 15 dedicated nodes for daytime rendering. The night/weekend number fluctuates wildly depending on who logs off or reboots. The Server service is only active when a user logs off.

          Server Service

We have our farm running as a service as well, downfall is that you can no longer see what's rendering on the node. Running as a service makes the server almost invisible on the render node. This is why I originally posted on the ability to double click a rendered task in the Queue Monitor. I like the ability to quickly check on a job as it's rendering to make sure everything is OK.

Yep, I believe it was with backburner2007 that they broke this, I've been missing it for a long time, and I do not know of any way to get the right click and open image functionality back. If anyone knows a way, please share!

what's weird is that I think I got it to work once...or maybe that is because I failed to remove all my old BB software so it was running under the old version??? Anyways, if you right click the task the full network path is still there...just doesn't open it

Yep, I know, I agree 100%. I loved this feature in backburner 3 and thought I was loosing my mind when max9 first came out with BB2007. Judging from what I've heard about backburner development (or lack thereof) I'm pretty much given up hope that this will be solved anytime in the near future, which again, I realize is sad because it is what seems like a pretty simple feature, moreso one that already existed in previous versions....

Edit: Ran a quick google search to ensure that this is still the case and I hadn't missed some weird workaround for it, ran across an old autodesk discussion forums thread from when it was first released, someone mentioned they thought it still work with the new backburner and max8. I still have max8 installed on my system so I tried it, submitting a max8 job to BB2007, and sure enough, the right click functionality is still there! For some reason it doesn't work on jobs submitted with newer versions of max! More digging to be done, not sure if there is still anything we can do about it, but it might actually be a max issue not BB!

Contacted Autodesk support and they said to revert back to the old version of Backburner we preferred and to make compatible with the newer version of Max you just had to go into the registry editor and copy the Max2009 key into the old Backburner plugin registry and that would enable it to work with the new version of Max. Bla...Bla...Bla...tried it and it didn't work?? Beginning it think it has something to do with my machine/network settings...the hunt continues!!!

Did they tell you the backburner plugin registry entry to look at? I tried searching for that to change the newer version but couldn't find it.

I suppose going back to the old BB and making the new Max work with it is an option, I was just curious what it is that makes the new BB work properly with the old Max but not the new one.

The newer version regkey is located in Autodesk/Backburner/2008.1/Plugins
The older version is located in Discreet/Backburner/3.0/Plugins

                        knew it worked once

Just discovered last night that if I submit a job from Max8 the feature WORKS!!
But take that same scene and submit it from Max2009Design and it DOESN"T!!
                        FYI...using the same machine.
