  • Stitching ??

Does anyone know how to create believeable stitching using 3dsmax ? Would you use geometry or textures ?

The type you would find on leather bound chairs etc

    I prefer geometry.

Does that include making the holes where the stitching goes ? That would be a nightmare task...
Im assuming you create a spline from a selected edge on your model and then create a shape for the stitch..and then repeat that shape around the spline just created..

Thats correct, a path constraint in combination with the snap shot tool is a real time saver here.

Thanks for the tips...I think it came out ok in the end..although I would really like to get the distortion the stitching makes when it pulls on the leather tightly...I guess it would have to be a combination of texturing and geometry to get that kind of detail...unless you have some other ideas...

I have done this a few times, if you are not viewing the stiching too close I find a simple renderable spline with a texture map will do.

For closer detailed stuff, I have used geometry for the stiches and a displacement map for the material indentation.

I haven't had to do this, but know at least one place that has a guy that all he does is stitching. He's got some tricks the others just don't know how. i'd really like to pick his brain.

Would be pretty cool to create the spline, then have some script that would create a texture at each point of intersection. That way you could more easily paint on the texture to really match the stitching if you did it manually.

I think that guy makes a spline, then has some script that does the stitching based on the surface in relation to the vertical spline. So basically he creates only one spline along the flow of the surface, then he has a script that does the various stitching. Some would be cross wasy, and some would be on either side of the seam of course. That stuff really is impressive. I wish I just had the resources to spend about 2 months working along side the guys that do this kind of stuff and are really good at it.

How would you constrain the displacement map to just the area of the holes and creases ?
