  • Home network problems.

For some reason communication between my two home computers is off and on, and it's been this way for a year now.

I have two computers connected to a hub. My main box (we'll call it "computer one" or "C1") and my laptop ("C2").

For distributed rendering to work, both computers need to see each other. At the moment, C2 can see C1 and access its shared folders. C1 can see that C2 is there, but when I click on it I'm told that it is not accessible, and that I should contact the administrator to make sure I have access permissions. And of course VRay DR says "???" when I click the Resolve Servers button.

This is the way things have been for most of the past year but, every now and then, the wind blows a certain way and life is good. That was the case for most of yesterday, but then C2 lost its network connection for a little while (loose connector) and I have been unable to restore harmony ever since.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks!

Do both systems use passwords for the login? Or do any use blank passwords? If you use an identical login or user on each machine that should help eliminate problems. If you use blank passwords you need to go into the global policy editor and enable the use of blank passwords.

Another thing you might consider is buying a switch instead of using a hub. In a 2 computer network, a hub shouldn't really cause any problems, but in general they are not as dependable or robust as a switch. If you're throwing lots of traffic at it while network rendering, the hub could be getting bogged down.

Also, are you using static IPs? or DHCP? You will have greater network reliability with static IP numbers.

There's a few things to check out.
