From what i've heard, the top end is frantic's 'flood' for liquids and fume for smoke.

I have not had chance to play with either yet

Flood is still not publically available sadly. There is Realflow with wich i had mixed experiences in the past. Fume for smoke/fire is a blast tho!

We use Fume for all our fire & smoke effects now and, in my opinion, nothing beats it. I'll be posting a new job soon with lots of Fume stuff so I'll let you know when I do.

Flood is pretty nice a set of tools, and works marvels with VRay too, but it's an internal product.
You could - not - see some water I rendered with VRay in W, of Oliver Stone. So good, that after comping I couldn't tell the difference.

Fume's also used and abused over here, as it allows for very nice results in a small amount of time.
And it allows for fire, smoke and so on, and can be mixed with pFlow, Krakatoa and so on.

For someone without a LOT of computing power, i'd suggest fume all the way.
Don't try making an ocean with it though
