  • surface contour check

    Hi Guys,

Im looking for a way to check the contour of an organic surface. I was thinking that being able to display the normals of an object via shading would probably work..is there a way to do this ?

I couldnt think of a way to display the normals of an object in the viewport....

I'm not 100% sure it's what you're after, but you could try Grant Adam's Tension Modifier : http://www.rpmanager.com/plugins/TensionMod.htm

You can use also the Edit Normals modifier to see them normals, but it doesn't display as a shader.

Thanks for the tips, but neither really help.

I was thinking that maybe a directx shader may work in the max viewport. Something to display the object normals... cant seem to find anything like that though. Maybe a height shader would work..

Would using double sided material with preview in the viewport help?

Not really...I really need some kind of visual feedback. The viewport object normals would definately work. Any imperfections in the curvature of a particular surface would show slightly different colours where the angle of the surface normal changes...

Sorry, I missunderstood. I thought you wanted a visual feedback on normals directions.
In that case could some sort of falloff material with complementary colours help?

Whats wrong with the concavity option in tension modifier?

Isn't it exactly what you are looking for?
