  • I need some tips on making dirt road texture

    Hi all

I need some tips on making a curved and also a straight dirt road. A while back I saw a thread here for MotorStorm, and wanted to do something similar just for practise. So, hmmm how can I make a dirt road with the tire tracks already in there asif cars have been driving there for years?

make the road shape using polys or a spline or whatever. Paint the track marks manually in PS and manipulate them with procedurals (like Bercon Distortion). Apply a subdiv modifier, and conform to your terrain. Tell it not to cast shadows, and make it transparent towards the edges using GradientEdge or another hand-painted mask.

This is how I do white lines on a tarmac road.

At some point last year I made a displacement map for tire tracks in dirt/sand. I sculpted it in Zbrush and made it tilable in Pshop. I recall it worked pretty well so if you are still playing with this and think it would help send me a PM and I'll dig it up for you.
