I'll double check the administrator settings - I think I'm finding it doubly frustrating because things have been so hectic over here at work what with heading out of the country on Saturday and all that good stuff and I didn't even consider there being any issues with Vista at this stage of the game, it's probably been out about 5 years already.

Thanks as always for you're help

Also remember that Max9 was released BEFORE Vista or very close to the Vista launch. So Max9 won't run on Vista unless you install SP2 for Max9 first. Just FYI.

I run Max 9 32 and 64 bit on Vista x64 without any problems, does kill the effects though of course. One of the first things i did was turn all the UAC stuff off though so that probably helps.

I'm running MAX 2008 & 2009 without problems now....I had some issues but I resolved them turnning off all the effects that Vista has by default to get the best performance(it works).

I noticed the exact same thing in Vista X64 with max 2009 and Nvidia GTX 285.
Setting windows to "best performance" mode made the viewports in 3dsmax at least twice as fast. Especially wireframe view is now several times faster.
This might also work on ATI cards.
            Reflect, repent and reboot.
            Order shall return.

You guys are getting the strange window selection craziness when setting Vista to "best performance"? As soon as I do that, it's as if the viewports have a half second delay or so when selecting anything with a marquee selection. When I turn everything in Vista on, the selection problem goes away. Weird!

I'm using Vista Ultimate 64 with max9/vray all 64 bit, and no problems. Also have another station running XP Pro 64 with no problems. I use itunes happily on both. I did disable the Vista Aero stuff on the first boot. Adobe said CS3 might not run on Vista 64, but it's running flawlessly after ~6 months. i guess i'd go with Vista 64 because XP Pro is not going to be carried into future...(I heard)

on top to pick "best performance" , I'd custumize it, there is a tab there and disable everything that you don't need it....it should work

It's good to see everyone's feedback here.

I just ordered a beefy new dual Xeon system. I haven't upgraded in a long time so it will be a treat as I am greedy for buckets at the moment.

I opted to go with WinXP 64bit. I figure when Windows 7 has been out for a year then I'll slap it on a $100 1TB SSD drive (I'm hoping anyway) and setup a dual boot. I figure I'll just miss the whole Vista thing altogether although it is good to hear that a number of people are having few or no problems with Vista.

I just read about the XP compatibility mode for Windows 7. It sounds like 95% of Windows XP software should run without issue in Windows 7 using this option, according to Microsoft anyway.

where do you plan on finding a $100 1TB SSD drive?

ummm, yah I'm just being optimistic with that price. Hey, you never know, it could happen.

                          I have a network drive(1TB) that I use it as a server.
                          http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11253

It's more expensive than your $100 budget but it's a great investment!!!
I don't where are you going to find it for that price...1TB SSD drive it's about $1,500

I wouldn't have a huge hard drive on a workstation....in my experience to me it's better to have all your info located on a network drive or server (RAID of course).

                            Thanks for the link.

I love the idea of these NAS devices, so simple, no extra computer to maintain.

I am not really holding out for a $100 ssd, just maybe a little more bang for the buck than what one could get today.
