  • Network question

Hi, I have a minor issue with my network. One machine is xp pro, the other is Vista Ultimate, both are 64 bit.

    Network info:
-2 computers on a single Linksys broadband router
    -not wireless
-both computers have dual network cards (does it matter?)

So, the issue, is over a 10-14 hour period, the Vista machine, can't see the other machine when browsing in windows explorer or windows network. However, the XP Pro, can still see the Vista machine. If I log on and off with either, the problem is solved, but only temporarily. I cannot seem to find a pattern in this behavior and it seems irregular, but it's a very annoying hiccup in the daily work flow...

So, does anyone know what causes this? Is there a timeout setting or something? Where should I look?

    Thanks!

I had an issue like this at home, Vista would lose connectivity, solution for me was to (damn been a while, I don't remember the exact settings) but as I recall it was to set the power saving settings to performance or something like that...

have a peek in device manager (right click my computer->manage->device manager)

expand the network adapters bit, then properties on the network card. Turn off power management if it has it.

      This may be the prob.

is there a big benefit of using 2 network cards? Does it give 2x speed, I guess yes? Or no?

Well, I think this might have solved it! Thanks for the tips!
I also did the following and it seems to be good, too...

"right click on your ethernet adapter then left click on prperties. On the advanced tab change the SPEED and DUPLEX to 100mbs full duplex."
(just a test and it was bad.)

100mb?? Why do that? aren't you abandoning 1000mb?

I had a similar issue. I ended up placing a shortcut to the missing machines (on the Vista box) on the desktop and ever since it shows all networked computers in windows explorer.

Give that a shot and see if it works.

I just tried it out, but it ended up being slower...
I'll give your idea a try right now.
                Thank you
