  • StarTrek movie - your thoughts?

This movie got about 96% rating on rottentomatoes, and many of my collegues recomended it to me so I went to watch it. I thought about seing terminator instead, but heard not so great comments about it so I saw the trek one.
I dont know what the whole fuss is about. All I can say about the movie is - it was the most lensflare I have ever seen in a movie. I think almost every shot had atleat 10 flares
Overall impression...a big smear of action...without anykind of sence of separation. Quite dissapointing.

This movie has too much fridge logic. The kind of things that, while you're reaching in your fridge for a beer a day later you go "Wait a sec, why not --enter valid question here---?" kind of stuff.

      For instance....

If you had a device that can make a black hole why would you need to drill to the planets chewy center to use it? Why not just set it off near the sun. Really make em suffer.

If you are traveling back in time.....in both Spock and the Romulan's cases....wouldn't you just use that time to prevent what ever was going to happen instead of just plotting revenge or hanging out on an ice planet?

I mean if I knew my planet was going to be destroyed by a star I would, being back in time and all, go and warn everyone I love instead of hanging around waiting to get revenge.

I am pretty sure with modern technology we can shoot a chain holding a platform that is firing a planet cutting laser underneath the atmosphere knocking it down and disabling it. Heck I am pretty cure we could, with some level of accuracy, shoot it down with jets from 30+ years ago. Knowing this makes you wonder why people would just hang out and stare at a laser cutting up the planet instead of trying to take it out.

Um.. I always knew there was a beer brewery in the Enterprise. Now I have seen it too.

Yet, even with all the sillyness, I was entertained and had fun watching it. There were some brilliant shots, like the person getting sucked out the airlock into space and then suddenly the sound goes silent.

But in the end even the Enterprise almost got sucked in that bigblack plot hole. Thankfully warp drives and explosions saved the day so they can face bigger plot holes in the future.

I thought it was epic. But I didn't treat it as the 'second coming' heading into the theatre. I did watch it in imax though.

too epic imo. Too much compacted into too little time. When I came out of the theater all was left in my head a smear of action, could not recall any specifics.

Really Dmitry? Even in this economy? You're a brave soul...

Pretty much in agreement with what you guys have said so far. I'm a long time Trek fan after my mother brought me up on re-runs of the original series. While a lot of my friends, also ST enthusiasts, were pretty happy with the movie, I wasn't terribly impressed. On the whole I enjoyed the movie more than the previous couple films, but I thought the reboot was lacking.

Star Trek was always about presenting a utopian future of the human race, when we've overcome poverty, suffering, and unrest once we took our place amongst a greater galactic community. That always resonated with me as plausible and I think at its core helped form my fundamental hope for the future. Watching this film, conciously aware that it was a reset of the series from the start, I was really disappointed to not feel that same optimism and hope. Maybe it's just a necessary cultural adaptation, but it bummed me out.

The movie also was a lot more cavelier with the science of it all -- I know it's fiction, but Star Trek was always more about what may be possible then it was about being eye candy. I'm not the only one who had their interest in the sciences stoked by the speculative technologies that Trek presented -- many scientists and astronauts have been so inspired. I'm not inspired by the thought of a starship's innards in the year 2260 being pretty much the same as the inside of a 20th century brewery. Good comparison, KC!

I'll stop, at the risk of sounding crotchety at the ripe old age of 26. Bottom line is it had the same characters, the same settings -- the same ingredients, but none of the subtleties that made Star Trek a multi-generational cultral phenom. None of those qualities are much compatible with the makings of a summer blockbuster, for sure, but I wish they'd just named it something else. There's plenty of room for new and creative science fiction films -- just look at Serenity! Sure that didn't make much in the box office, but that's what the J.J. Abrams name is for, and the last Trek movies barely broke even from what I recall.

                Cheers!

Looks brilliant and promises to be something to think about, rather than a "count the lens flares" job.
Unfortunately the UK has to wait until 17th July before we can get our 2001 inspired sci-fi fix.
