  • Connection Extension for Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2010

This thing is out today, and the new EXR plugin is great. However I can't get it to work with vrimg output. It still outputs a single EXR, but the options dialog for it doesn't come up. Aside from that, it's great!

When you write an .exr file through the "Raw image file" option, V-Ray does the actual .exr writing itself and does not use any 3ds Max code for that. If you wish to use the 3ds Max .exr saver you must use the regular output file options in the Common tab of the Render Setup dialog.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

You also have to use the max frame buffer, otherwise new exr plugin does not recognise that the render elements are there because they are off.

So this new exr plugin really doesn't offer anything new if we already write the .exr files out through the VFB?

Not related to the connection extension, but on the download page there's ImageModeler 2009 now too. I downloaded it, and used the supplied serial number from our subscription page, but it also asks for a product key which isn't on the page - anyone had luck getting ImageModeler activated?

Ken mentioned on cgarchitect that there was a problem with the key and that they would put out a new one as soon as they worked it out, but to 'feel free to use the 30 day trial in the meantime, as it shouldn't take that long to get the fixed key'

On the downside, my subscription account is disabled for some reason! bugger, got the powers that be finding out whats going on as i'm pretty sure its paid till december!

Ah ok - with the errors I was getting I was just imagining a big old red flag appearing next to our account in their databases for trying to activate it a few times and getting rejected.

              Thanks!

The one thing I hoped for with the new EXR IO is strip rendering with render elements intact.

I believe the answer is yes, it is planned to work that way. There is a chance it doesn't work that way as released, but it is planned for it to work that way (if you know what I mean).

Posted by jonahhawk on 2009-08-09 at 2:49 AM Hi Ken,

GREAT extensions! I am very much looking forward to them as is. The one question that has all my fingers and toes crossed is: With layered EXR support, will render elements work with strip rendering in Back Burner? As it stands now, the only way to achieve this is through distributed bucket rendering which is not manageable over BB with multiple users in different offices, using the same render farm resources...

Hey good point. If no one else checks this - i'll give it a shot some time this week unless something comes up.
