  • So many nice jobs -Sorry no Visa for you -general rant

    Hi all

So basically it seems if you are not a US or EU citizen/resident, you're screwed for pretty much all the cool positions advertised. I've found so many jobs (even with the downslump people are experiencing - or are they?) and many of those adverts have pretty much "my name written all over" it and I'm just about to click the apply button or send cv button when I read the small print at the bottom:

"must be eligable to work in UK"
    or
"only open to members of EU"
    etc etc.

    Man that is so frustrating!
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

As part of the glorious Commonwealth, you'd think you, I, and Canadians would have an easier time than US/EU citizens getting a job/visa. And i'm pretty sure this is the case. Contact the British Embassy and find out what's up, because it could be that it's assumed that if theres a job in any Commonwealth nation, you're eligible so why state the obvious.

I'm not sure what you mean. Could you put it another way?

DVP3D I am saying South Africa is a part of the Commonwealth, therefore, you should be able to get a job in any other Commonwealth nation, including the UK, Australia, Canada, etc. without much fuss. You should definitely call the British embassy and ask them questions about it, like "I am looking at some jobs in the UK and many of them say I need to be a US or EU resident, but what about Commonwealth nations?".

You have to get a company to sponsor you but this cost them money! So it is easier for them to employ a local or EU citizen as there is no cost involved. Also due to rising unemployment in commonwealth countries they will tighten up on employing foreigners. You should have made your move a few years ago.

              Good luck
