I have evermotion trees and they are ok, but the leaves and sometimes the mapping of the trunks are not very good...plus the modelling isnt that great when close.

Would anyone recommend any high quality vray trees or just high quality trees pre-made.. or would you use onyx or something similar ?

there is someone on turbosquid that has some pretty good trees/plants, called 3d-molier, I think. You have to look around since some of it is low poly. worth a look maybe.

Check these ones, I use them all the time and they look great. Plus they do not grind Max to snails pace like the Evermotion one do.

IMO both iCube AND Molier trees are worst then Evermotion up close. The best way is doing it yourself with Onyx or GrowFX. The bad thing about all plugins is that there is no way to get a seamless transition between the trunk, boughs and branches. In that regard I even got better results with SpeedTree. The Evermotion trees are also better in that regard, but the bark is textured very badly (boughs/branches that just are not UV'd at all !!) and sometimes useless for closeups.

An awfully expensive option would be to buy Cinema4D with the DPIT Plant plugin, which does joined branches and handles the UV's (and I think it has it's own bark shader that respects joints, so you could bake it out as a map).

Personally i'd go with GrowFX, which doesn't (yet) do joined branches but does just about everything else. Whatever you do though, you'll probably have to do quite a bit of messing around to get a good end result - even the Evermotion trees need material tweaking.

The new iTrees series at rendering.ru look great - wonder what they used?

to build the trees? the geometry looks very much like GrowFX, their own product

Nice trees but I'd rather have them release GrowFX libraries for existing customers.

Growfx is resold by them on behalf of Exlevel, and as I said, growfx doesnt do connected branches unless they bridged them all by hand!

The mentor plants are growfx because the guy said so! But the "i" series appears to have been done by someone else.

I would imagine that Karba uses Tree Forge.

All good info. Thanks. Im thinking about Onyx. It looks pretty versatile albeit fairly complicated as some people have said in other threads, plus I just read a tutorial here: http://www.evermotion.org/tutorials/...liage-tutorial

and this guy uses onyx for the background and foreground trees even though he alters the foreground ones for greater detail. Think I may go this way..

Karba should team up with Exlevel to make GrowFX 2.0 :P

And he mentioned Bionatics plugin too.

It looks nice, but too expensive.

Bionatics is ridiculous. I think it's appeal is that it comes with presets, or "seeds" that replicate a real-world tree, and you can tweak the seed and tree age and it will still look like that tree, so it's taking some of the work out.

                              Bionatics

I bought Bionatics and it never worked and if it did it looked awful. I think I payed $1,200 and never used it in production. It might have gotten better... I should look into updating my copy and see if it is more stable.
