  • Suggestions for modelling this stone feature wall?

We are working on an interior with a complex, rubble/stone wall that features quite prominently within the composition. This image is what we are basing the model on, and as in the image, the wall will have a couple of circular holes (windows) in it. To add to the complexity slightly, our version of this wall curves slightly as well.

I'm interested in hearing how some of you might go ahead with such a task.
    Kind Regards,

if you have a budget to spend on it get the new plugin from cebas for breaking up geometry. its kinda cool

you could give the bunch of free fracture scripts a go. Some Voronio breaking might just do the trick

        Here's a quick 5 minute test.

Box with 5 width segments and 6 height segments, rough opening modeled, bent, FractureVoronoi script, subdivide, mesh smooth

You beauty! That looks really nice. I will have a play around.

That's very nice, but wouldn't it mean way too much geometry when extrapolated to a full scene? And you'd have to texture each stone individually.
I would go with a texture and a very good displacement map.

CGTextures has something that could make a good starting point:

you can just proxy them out. That will prolly render even faster than displacement as you get rid of the preprocessing (wich subdivides anyways, just at rendertime only).

Here's a little script to randomly apply a group of materials to a number of elements if you want to add some random variation; I've used it mainly for proxied vegetation.

Modeling the geometry will take less time than getting the texture and displacement map to look good, and as mentioned they can always be proxied out. For a whole structure I'd probably go with displacement.

Not bad. Looks a little too 'voronoi' though to me. Don't know if this is an option for you, but rayfire has several types of options for fracturing objects, some that include more natural methods that allow concave surfaces.

about 10 mins of using rayfire. I think there's a demo of it.

I know what you mean, but its far better than I ever thought possible (with my limited skillset at any rate!). Thanks for all your suggestions.
Anyway, I doubt my client will know what looking 'too voronoi' will mean
