  • Buck: Sherwin breakdown

    Motionographer just published this:
    http://motionographer.com/theater/bu...win-breakdown/

Ben: We switched from mental ray to vray halfway through the project due to insane render times. And therefore, we were using vray like we usually use mental ray. Spitting out tons of passes and mattes to build our comps. However, in the new spots we were able to get color keys approved in the early phases so we know where our colors need to be. Now we are using vray to get everything in the beauty including DOF and Motion Blur. Phew, no more render layers.
Awesome Was it done with Maya? Wasn't the technical director a part of the Vray Beta programme?

very cool! And wow, Vray beating mental ray at insane render times?! cool!

I switched halfway through a production too. Saved almost an hour on rendering time for a single print and was higher quality too.

Seriously V-Ray for Maya is the best thing to happen to freelancers & one-man-shops using Maya for...well since a very long time.

long render time differences are simply due to lack of knowlege of the renderer.

Negative, mental ray proxies and BSP2 was killer slow back a few versions ago - a confirmed bug of course. Anyway mr's adaptive sampling on blurry shaders cannot compete with the speed of DMC.

It was done in Maya. this is actually the second time we have switched half way through a project. first it was the LA office rendering cars with motion blur went from 2 hours a frame down to 20 minutes or so (it was over a year ago so i don't remember exactly) and then on this project in NY translation times with mental ray specifically where destroying those scenes, but they popped right through in Vray.

that is very interesting to hear jermy, i've always been told that mental ray was the fastest renderer for animations and that "all the major studios use mental ray instead of vray because of speed". to hear Buck switched to vray with results like that is excellent ammo for use in future discussions
from my experience, mental ray can be a terrible time thief to set up / learn / render with, Vray is miles ahead in most ways imho.
