  • best file format output for animation

I've always used a targa file for animation series. Is this the best or should I be using a different format?

Targa is good, but it's only 8bit per channel.
We use mostly 16bit tif or EXR. That way there is so much more colour information and freedom in the post. (colour grading etc...)

If you want to keep file size down PNG is pretty good and has a 48 bit option as well.

If you want the best quality then use a 32bit format such as .EXR

You can almost post-process a bright day render into night with a 32bit image without any colour banding or artifacts.. they are just so much more versitile.

The files are larger, but they can use lossless compression & these days huge hard drives are so cheap that storage isn't an issue anymore.

        Cheers
