  • Max 2011 - Can I set the "Get Material/Map Browser" also to previous version?

    Hi all

OK so you can switch between the new slate editor and the old classic material editor. So also can you switch between the classic scene explorer and the new one. Now, how can I set the "Get Material/Map Browser" also to previous version? I find this new window extremely slow and annoying. Half the time I have to minimize maximise to see anything in this window. Other times I have to select "show incompatible" maps for things to show up. But even if that worked, it is still much slower than the previous version.

Anobody have a solution? (did a search but didn't find anything)
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

    1. Tell Autodesk how terrible they are !

    3. Try this.. havenĀ“t tried it myself. Use on your own risk
    From the official forum.

    Get material menu:

Find the SME.ini file in your documents and settings/*username*/local settings/application data/autodesk/3dsmax/2011/enu/plugcfg folder

Then find in it the lines:
“UseOldMtlBrowser=0” and set the value to 1 (UseOldMtlBrowser=1).

For Win7 users the folders are a little bit different. Go to users/*youruser*/appdata/local/autodesk and so on..

EDIT: Oh ok I had to close max 1st before editing the file. 1. Close Max. 2. Edit File. 3. Start max and the world makes sense again
      Thanks for the tip!

Is there a way to disable caddies too?
I miss the old style simple minimalist dialog box which never crashes.

I'm guessing the new material browser was done for a reason. What's the advantage of the new vs the old?

I don't think Autodesk are doing anything for reason.

They are on a mission to add stupid new gadgets as viewcube, info center, caddies, ribbon toolbar.
They proudly call it "XBR", whatever that means.

                  See:
                  http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/ken/excalibur_xbr_notes

Lot of bullshit, if you ask me.
The underpowered coding team is not familiar with the old codebase, so they buy 3rd party plugins (node joe) and simply replace old components, to make thing look more like Modo, or whatever.
                  That's what I think.
