  • how to do it? light shining through perforated material (lamp).

I need to create lamp that is made of metal with tiny perforations that when turned on light will glow through those perforations. I don't want to render the lamp with vray light inside because it will take ages. Anyone got any tips how it can be done in post? How to mimic the bulb inside the metal lamp?

This is a tricky one and I doubt I can help. But I have one question that might help a future respondent -- are you asking about the light that is seen through the perforations and inside the lamp? If so, can't you just use a self-illuminated object in a spherical or bulb shape?

Or are you talking about how to create a realistic lighting effect emanating out of the lamp and recreating the way it illuminates the objects around it?

I guess I need both to make it look realistic So I need to see that there is bulb inside through perforations and also I need to see lighting effect outside the lamp (basically it will be just light color and reflection of light on surface. It's a studio setup so only surface reflection, there are no objects around the lamp. I will try to put some sample renders here to illustrate what I mean.

Using the Reflect/Refract map, render out a cubic environment map from inside the lamp, then use that as a project-map on an omni light. Before you do it, you will need to hide everything in the scene besides the lamp and throw a flat black material on the lamp.

Or... maybe it's too early and I'm not understanding exactly what the problem is... ~;oP

sorry, but the only thing I understand is to project map on omni how should I render cubic environment map?

The more I think about it, the more I think I was thinking too much. Sometimes I get a little overly creative before I've had my coffee.

You can do it with just an omni light inside a self-illuminating bulb object. And exclude the bulb object from the light and/or shadow casting.

But if you're curious, about the cubic thing: Load a Reflect/Refract map into the Material Editor. Click "From File", and at the bottom you will see a "To File" button. Click that and it will ask you what to name the cubic files, then it will ask you what object you would like those to be rendered from. Then you can use that for whatever purpose you want. It's how most reflections were done back in the day when raytracing was too slow to be any fun.

                scene: lamp , bulb inside.

the thing is that material of the lamp is aluminum so it's already giving me a lot of render time, plus I will have artifacts with rendering animation(lamp will be moving on the table) with light shining through (this is why I want to do it in post) . I also would like to avoid showing perforations of the material(tiny holes that normally wouldn't be visible on real product). I used opacity map and it's also killing render times. Of course I don't want to see bulb shape so hard I want it to glow this is also why i want to use post to be able to control the effect easier.

Ah. I was assuming that the perforations were big and spaced farther apart. I still think you should try it with a standard omni light with VRay shadows. To obscure the shape of the bulb object you could use a falloff for transparency, so all you would see is a fuzzy glow in there.

I'm using vray sphere light. How I can assign fallof transparency to a vray light?! And the big question is how to render it in layers so I can compose it in post ?

Make your light invisible and use a modeled object or sphere for your bulb and exclude it from shadow casting and make it invisible to the light inside it. Then you can tailor the look of the bulb however you want.

Have you tried the the vray2sidedMtl - might help with the major moire issue you are getting from all the tiny perforations. Also try a vray light material on a bulb shape object.
