Is anybody running any of the Adobe CS5 suite on Win XP64?? I have read mixed things as to whether it is supported/works, particularly aftereffects...

We've had an utter nightmare with Adobe and CS5. They (adobe) are a bunch of tw**s!
Anyway, our experience shows that you need a newer OS than XP64 (which we run). In other words, you'll need Windows 7 (or perhaps vista). Also, AFX and Premiere need a 64bit OS.
(we tried upgrading a test CS5 system to Windows 7 ultimate, but driver support for our graphics cards was poor, and Max ran like a dog with 3 legs. Needless to say we've reverted to XP64!)

yup windows 7 64 is required as noted above. I noticed AFX is faster with the 64 bit and my Max seems to run fine

I know this probably doesn't help, but we're running Windows 7 64bit across the board & not had a single problem with CS5 or 3ds max, in fact both run very well.

The XP framework must be getting on for being 10 years old, so I can understand why certain developers no longer support it.

never had a problem with adobe software.
CS5 is pretty good...especially premiere and after fx are _lot_ faster on windows 7/64.

In fact, photoshop cs5 is about the fastest app on my computer now, it starts in 2 sec. with the ssd.
I don't understand why 3dsmax still takes over 10 sec to load, when every other app does it almost instantly, with a ssd drive.

on my i7 with XP64 max 2011 takes more than 5 minutes to load on 2 SATA drives using raid 0

We upgraded our workstations from XP64/CS3 to Windows 7/CS5 a couple months ago and it's been fantastic. Windows feels faster, apps start faster and CS5 is amazing. Unfortunately our Quadro cards aren't on the approved list to accelerate Premiere / After Effects but despite that AE renders a lot faster now. Their multi-processing engine is a lot better than it was with CS3.

Well throw out the raid and get a ssd.
I got a 120gb vertex2 drive for about 200 eur, it's amazing. It's almost feels like everything is in RAM.
I can open firefox, photoshop, lightroom, etc. at the same time and everything is ready almost instantly. With 3dsmax and archicad being the exception. I did a test now, it takes exactly 18sec for max to load after a fresh boot. Most other programs about 2 sec.
I'd also suggest getting rid of winxp, it's pretty old by now. With modern hardware windows 7 is faster all around. Again 3dsmax viewports are the exception probably, but I can live with that. If there is a difference I didn't notice it.

I'm surprised that ppl are still using XP64. We used it for a little while, but our biggest problem was drivers. Nearly every machine we had at the time had unsupported hardware (no drivers at all) or the drivers were half implemented or buggy. Our whole shop has been running Vista64 until Win7 came out, at which point we upgraded the desktops to Win7 64. The biggest complaint about Vista64 was that the viewports in any 64bit Max was supper slow, 32bit Max was fine. Seems a lot better with Max 2011/Win7.

Im using Windows 7 with CS5 and max and its all pretty much good. Im also using winxp on my render slaves and they work fine...ive had the occasional drop of one of the servers but I think its a specific problem to that server, the others are fine.

Quick question.....Are the SSD Hard Drives super quiet and do they get hot ?
                          Regards

well there is no moving parts in SSD, so yes you won't hear them at all. They get warm, not hot. A lot cooler than standard HDD.
