Could you use point cache for one particular object and then all similar could use the same point cache with offset keys...I guess very simililar to morphing.
You need to join each animated section up into the same object, then you can split that it sensibly named panels and use particle flow with a script to link particles to objects. You only need to do that for large surfaces, then you can do bits by hand in a similar style.
the way i understand to use these script is to animate one object then transfer the animition keys while offset the time to create the effects...
I am in no way an expert and still learning to use these myself...
i have a couple more resources for this type of animation, I'll have to dust the cobweb out of the back of my mind to remember the links...
