I don't care for vray-materials.de, so I'll check this out.

I hate their "setup" scene with the dice. You can't see the materials nicely.

Yeah - the dice isn't a good example.

The main problem I have with Vray-materials.de is that the submitted materials are often poorly optimized. You find things like the built-in displacement being used and high rendering subdivisions. To add to the issue, you have other users who do not know Vray very well submitting high-rankings for some of these mats simply because they look pretty, but in fact jacked up your rendering times unnecessarily. There really needs to be a better way to measure quality versus optimization than having to rely on ignorant user reviews.

Don't get me wrong - I do use them from time to time and they have some killer examples, but often I find myself having to go in and tweak things a bit.

I've tried and tried using the materials at vray-materials.de, but I can not get the same results ever with my LWF 2.2 setup. I have no idea why, I just end up making "worn brass" each time

I have learned to make my own so I know how they were made. One bad material and your render times can sky rocket. i think a lot of people load their scene with downloaded materials and wonder why V-Ray is so slow.

Maxwell still has the best online material repository IMO, and I think it's largely because Next Limit vets all the materials on there (unless you are an "approved" member). Granted, there is far less flexibility in their materials in terms of optimizations, so render times are probably not as easily messed with.

Vraymaterials.de is good for some ideas on approach once in a while, and it's a good source for some quick maps you can scavenge for your own materials

                agree with Brett.
the biggest drawback of the vraymaterials.de is that the mats miss size information.....they should be made in world coordinates with exacts sizes specified directly in the mat editor...i usually download them, get textures, and make my own mats

I agree with Martin too - each time you apply a UVW map you have to guess what size it should be. It is a good place to occasionally find textures to scavenge for their bitmaps.

The preview images are so highly compressed that you can't see any detail.

I would like it if the site allowed me to view a larger thumbnail immediately instead of first going to the material (ie. go to "Material/Glass") and then click one of the thumbnails, it should pull up the thumbnail image here instead of directing to another page with another thumbnail. Also, reconsider the dice imo. Just some ideas.
