I am finding it hard to model from a plan because I can't see the lines I am drawing. How do people work like this?

Just move your plan down in Z. Use 2.5d snaps. That way the new lines you create are at 0 and the plan lines are say 4 ft below.

Move planes to right/left/front, make them backface culing, and so on. I usually have them miles away from my model.... frozen...use alt+x on models to get transparency look

or use standard materiual with opacity set to 50% for the blueprint then you'll see it in viewport

I'll try that standard material... the frozen layer turns off the map for me.

Just released this script that does what you need
                http://75ive.com/tools.html#blueprint_manager

The script was written for a series of video tutorials on maxscript. To see them look under tutorials on my site.

                Hope this helps!

Interesting, but can u make slider to move away the planes? So they not so close to each other... I find out that once its far away its less distracting and easier to model...
