  • Recommendations for good dynamics/cloth simulation package

Would you recommend a 3d package - ive heard c4d is good for this sort of stuff...

Im asking because Im finding max's cloth sim very slow because of the lack of multithread support.

Im really looking for a dynamics solution that can be standalone or integrated but is quick.

    Spankyou very much.

Thanks for the heads up on Marvelous Designer. It seems like a great tool for what is a pretty low price. I just started messing with it but, so far, I like it.

I am slightly troubled by the license agreement of M.D. It seems that to use it to make stuff for renderings, you need to buy the Small Business version if you intend to charge for your renderings...

From the personal license section of the License Agreement...
"Licensee may distribute his/her own 3D works created in Software and their 3D derivatives only for non-commercial purpose. And Licensee may distribute or sell any 2D images and 2D animations derived from his/her original works. The usage is prohibited in companies, government organizations and educational organizations."

I hope that I am reading this wrong?

I hope to buy this, but not if I have to drop $699 for it...

Yah, I personally, don't like complicated license agreements. There is a long thread on their forum about this subject which helps to clarify their current policy. The conclusion is that you, if you work as an individual, can sell your renderings and use the personal edition for commercial work but you can't sell or distribute the actual cloth meshes you create with the $100 license. That works for me at present and seems fair enough.

The $700 commercial price, if that's your category, is a bit steep for what is going to be a niche tool for most people. I don't really get the $1400 price point at all.

hope its ok to jump on the thread. I recently also tried MD but i had nothing but problems, mainly not being able to import anything from Max.. Has everyone been successful in doing this?

yah, the objects show up transparent from max. There is an object browser on the right. navigate to /3D Simulation and find the obj root or collada root and select a mesh and change the transparency setting to a full 100%. ( There is apparently some type of misunderstanding about the meaning of the word)

Apparently the new beta version (out today) improves import from 3D Studio Max significantly...haven't tried it yet though.

Thanks for the clarification, now it looks more feasable at $100

Just tried importing from Max into Marvelous Designer and it works fine. The trick is to export from max as .dae (collada) and not IMPORT it into Marvelous Designer but just OPEN it. Your .dae objects will then open as an avatar and be ready for some draping action .
It seems actually fairly easy to use and fun!
