The real factor is this... they are the first to have it in Maya... or at least announce that they do, and they are will be showing it at Siggraph which will guive them a HUGE exposure.

As far as quality of render. I think it is just fine for a rendering engine that has not even really been tested by artist.

If you judge a rendering engine by the gallery, you are judging it for the wrong reason. Rendering engines don't have a "make me a artist" button. You have to do that on your own.

showing at siggraph means very little

unless the big boys are using your software to show off their hardware, or unless people actually stop at your teeny booth in the back corner of the exhibit hall, its not gonna stick in anyone's mind

It already made it to this forum, so I think it will stick to many peoples memory. Rumors spread fast on the internet!

I agree that we can't really comment on this program, as there are only a few renders available, without any info. So let's just wait a bit before trashing this turtle.

I always know that Maya Artist can't use render...

I do not care at all, it think the surprising thing on siggraph will be a Vray Standalone Version. But as far as I was speaking with people they think MentalRay is still the best render of it all. Well, let them think what they want to, Vray is best. But it should be improved, so where is 1.1 ?

Man... you seem very bias. I love Vray, I think most people know I do. I talk about how cool it is. But there are so many amazing rendering engines out there. I have been using Renderman for a while now, and even though it seems so primitive in some ways, it can produce some of the best results I have ever seen.... This is without raytracing, without, GI, without raytrace lighting or anything. Just pure shading.

Mentalray as well. It is also very well proven in production. I can handle most anything and there are millions of shaders written for it. Renderings like those done for Fight Club, The Cell, Panic Room, Star Wars... I mean come on! How can you make such a crazy statement that Vray is better then MentalRay? Work on a couple of movies with them, and then make a statement like that. They are both good in their own way.

I would love to see Vray being pushed into film more. The guys at Digital Dimension are having some good results. But there needs to be a lot more of that for it to work for most. Vray is slowly getting its maturity, but it still has a ways to go.

Yeah, I think that at this forum have recently been many more negative reactions towards renderers other than VRay. It wasn't like that in the past. The open feeling of this forum is starting to turn into something very different, something like "look at those mistaken who are not smart enough to see that our VRay is the best of all". I don't think that this is a professional approach.

I agree with you Dusan, there have been lots of childish threads started lately. I hope we won't have any more of them, or this forum would deteriorate into uselessness. All the threads are accomplishing is giving VRay users a bad reputation.

                              i agree

Ive been around since the beta testing days - when we only had the delphi forum and not many users. This was not the way it was done.

                              'to the vray fan club'

Vray's popularity has spawned a new generation of 3d wannabes who think the software makes the artist. Sorry guys it all comes down to the artist - ive seen guys who create amazing images with just the scanline renderer.

put aside the new generation renderers and go back to scanline - test your skills - then you will come back with a deeper understanding.

                              regards
