  • growing model and texture libraries...how do you manage it to keep thi clean and tidy

How do you guys manage growing model and texture libraries. I assume most of us keep models and textures separate (i have one drive mapped for models, proxies) another one for textures.
Now when you buy some model collections they usually come with textures. Do you split it? Or keep things together?

my technique generally involves getting everything all mixed up in different folders, with as many duplicates as possible, and then forgetting what i do and dont have, eventually digging what i need out of a job archive i remember using it in, or performing a whole drive search to find it if i can remember the name.

as you can imagine ive perfected it over many years.

This is my method too. Maybe we read the same book on organization? I think it was written by Jackson Pollock.

I have one folder called assets, with several descriptive folder under it, like textures/brick and models/furniture. I have the assets folder mirrored on another machine and synchronized to Carbonite. I do not like wasting time looking for things so I am very tidy with my assets; everything has a place.

Same here, big mess, was thinking, if there is any soft, where I can tag files with keywords, with search possibilities, able to find duplicates, in results capable to display different image and 3d formats?

You can do that with Google Picassa too. Not that I do, though. It's kinda hard to start new habits.

After trying ACDSee and Picasa for a while, I'm back to using Bridge to catalog image files - it's the only one that can view and keyword all the various formats I end up using. I don't have anything for organizing Max files though - just trying to remember to name things appropriately for later recall. It would be a good system if I could finally learn that names like "bottle_01_012_final_final2" do not make sense even a week after a job is done

                        Priceless.

                        Sidenote:
                        I have a lot of "draft_01_revision_03_final" files....

I'm in the organized camp. We keep a global assets folder, and then also a project assets folder with the project for items that are purely project specific and won't be used on other projects.

Attached is my basic organization with the models section expanded.
