To be honest I think documentation and tutorials are far more worthwhile than presets. There isn't a huge amount of parameters in the vray material for example so I reckon it's fairly quick to get results from. The dmc sampler is a slightly different case in terms of optimizing a scene but again presets won't really help you with every scenes because of vray's adaptive nature. I think you're better off figuring out a theory of how things work so you can have a pretty good idea what to change to get the result you want early on - that'll probably save you as much time as presets.

spot on, i am sure presets can be all good, but i am also sure it would make me very lazy, and in the end lazy is no good. oh god how i've suffered from early lazyness towards the inevitable deadline!

Preparing them takes time and resources that i personally see better spend on other things....but that might be just me

That said Thorsten you've got a mind that grasps a lot of these things quicker than most. I worked as a lecturer for a lot of years and found that everyone takes in and understands information differently - a lot of the explanations of vray technology are quite technical / scientific as opposed to slightly more artist friendly explanations which could at least give the end user enough knowledge to start playing with things and start developing their own methods and theories that make sense to them?

Definitely. But i don't think that presets help there. Better Docs and Tutorials ? Am all for it. From my experience presets mostly leads to people using them blindly...no matter if they make sense for a specific situation and without the slightest clue about the settings saved in the presets

There is always SolidRocks... it does a much better job than we can ever hope to do.

                      Best regards,

Quoted for 100% agreement. Presets can save time in theory but taking time to learn how is a much more valuable investment in my opinion.

As the old saying goes, give a man a fish & he'll smell of fish. Teach him to render & he'll order a pizza.

I think SolidRocks is a great way to resolve the "preset" problem. One thing I would add to the doc/tutorial thought is that naming parameters in ways that are sensible to non-expert users would resolve a lot of questions/problems IMO. It's a very prevalent issue with almost all render/CGI software I've looked at. Name things by what they do, not what they are etc.
