  • Intel 2600K or i7 970?

So what's the story here? The SandyBridge 2600K is 1/4 of the price of an i7 970. Question is for rendering, does it beat or at least rival the i7 950/970/980x?

I've seen plenty benchmarks (non 3D rendering benchmarks) and the 2600K seems to beat the i7 with just about all the tests.

What has your research shown you and would you recommend the new 2600K over something like the i7 970?

I'm looking into new workstations and render slaves. Seems dual XEON is a dying breed as the cost is 10 times the price for 10% extra performance?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

    Here there is a 3dsmax 2010 benchmark : http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/d...2010,2420.html

btw: I will love to see a chart with the i7-2600k overcloack at 4.5GHz....

Wow! Where did this thing come from? I just spec'd out a respectable build on newegg and total hardware cost was around $1500 US. Not bad!

Yes this is what we suspected also. Although the space flyby is not much of a benchmark, it does show that the 2600K is the one to go for it seems as per other benchmarks. Why they bother to still sell the 970 and 980 at such a rediculous cost is however beyond me. I mean the 2600K seems like the clear winner performance and cost wise. You can build 2 X 2600k slaves for the price of 1 i7980 and get much better performance.

hmm. This is all new ! Ive just purchased another mobo for an i7 so might send that back now. Shame the cpu's don't just fit into the socket 1366 mobos.

              Motherboard problems at the moment:

So what mobo have you got ? Do you have any comparitive tests with an I7-940 or so system ?

I need 6 DIMM slots. 4 is not enough.

Sandy Bridge with the extra chipset features introduced with 1366...killer combo in the making it would seem

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1356

All you will need is a new MB and processor

Its doubtful this Sandy Bridge tech will keep the lower price when it hits the professional level though, letting the i7-2600(K) maintain it's appeal for a while at least, kinda like the i7 920 has.

Do you think they will raise the price? I can't see that happening personally..I would have thought that they would lower the price of the I7-9**'s.
