Different Max setups for different tasks

Back in the days of beta testlig Brazil I set up a shortcut to Max with instructions to load Brazil. That way I had one install of Max with different setups. I'd like to do that again so that I can have a production setup and a play setup where I can r&d.
Does anyone know what I'm after?

Are you talking about different Vray setups? you could do that with Render Presets

No I'm intersted in having multiple plugin.ini files. I need to have a production stable default setup. But I'd like to have a second setup where I can play with plugins without the risk of not beeing able to submit jobs to our renderfarm. I want to be able to open scenes with my production setup and get warnings if there are plugins active that are not installed on the renderfarm.

So what prevents you from again using the -p command line option when running 3dsmax.exe to specify a different plugin.ini file?
