then up the price like 10 times. Also if you used any assets you purchased like bitmaps or models, he obviously can NOT have those because you're forbidden from redistributing bought assets in general
once he has your settings etc, he has no reason to use you again. He'll just "pop" new stuff into the scene at it "will just work"
I usually tell clients they original agreement was for final renders to be supplied. Anycase unless they have the rioght software, the models are useless to them. If they do want models, they must pay A LOT more for it.
Evermotion and those guys makes a lot of money by selling models for cheap - but they have a LARGE user base. You'll be selling your model to only 1 person who will do who knows waht with it, therefore he must pay a hefty premium to get your hard work.Last edited by Morne; 11-05-2011, 12:35 AM.Kind Regards,

Doing archviz, I work for architects only.
Of course I get that question here and then, because they believe that I'm doing renders with AutoCAD, or whatever they use for CAD.
So they have no clue. They believe they load the dwg file into autocad, and the final render is there, interactively, as a viewport.
It's easy to educate them that it's impossible to do anything like that by themselves, of course they would love to.
If they insist (sometimes it's a competition requirement to provide some 3d file, even if it's stupid, but many times things are done in a stupid way)
Anyway, if they insist, I give them an exported 3ds/dwg file without materials, collapsed to a single big ugly triangulated mesh
That's worthless for both of us, but chance is high that they wont even look at it.Marc Lorenz

They hired you as a service, and you provided the service they hired you for. I would think you can negotiate the sale of the model, if you want, but it would be another contract.Bobby Parker

I hate that....depending how good is the client...if they don't represent a good chunck of your income, I wounldn't do it.
if they are good clients, the model have to be what you modeled for them without commercial geometry and textures...mess around a bit, because renderings have always post-work, so the output will be different anyway.
don't forget to explode your model as much as you can!!! and you should use all the plugins that you have so they will get a lot errors there.

what Colin says sounds quite likely, I'd seriously take it into consideration.. I tend to agree with Bobby though, what they paid for is a series of rendered images, unless clearly agreed otherwise, not 3d scenes. if you make the decision to hand them the scene, and they can actually render it at all, then consider that you're selling something which is much more valuable than meshes and lights..

clients getting smarter day by day.. few days ago i saw a similar posting on a popular freelance website where client was ready with base model, he want someone to fill it with interior stuff along with complete lighting & texturing on our own. I saw many ready to do this at as cheap as 250 USD! i dont understand how can anyone do it so cheap.. also if they using purchased libraries, how they can sell model like this?? I generally refuse to provide 3d model with lighting & texturing at any cost, if at all i have to do it, i provide them autocad 3d model( i make architectural 3d model in autocad) without any lighting or texturing.

well I knew form the start that they want to render whole thing by themselves and want from me just whole model of the scene with textures but they just shoot me with request for lighting setup at the end ...Luke Szeflinski

I get this all the time. Its a hard one because there could be more work from them in the future but I find it painful to give scenes away especially when I say its going to cost 3 times the original cost of the project. Most clients back off after that to be honest.. I would also be careful if you sign a contract as I had one sent to me recently and it wavered all my rights to files. I enquired about it and I'm going to ask the client to re-write the terms saying that ownership of source files belongs to me unless otherwise agreed in a separate contract.
