  • simcloth 3 or reactor or anything?

    Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if this is possible: Imagine you have a box sitting on top of another box, run the dynamic simulation, so far so good, a nice stable system. Then i want the bottom box to decrease in size quickly and the other to adjust itself accordingly. Now as far as i can see, simcloth3 does not take into account animated changes in mesh size, i even linked the vertexes to a dummy and moved that but no joy. I also tried it in reactor, and same thing. I used a rigid body system. Does anyone know if this is even possible?

    Regards,

    Marc

      Hey Jon,

      Was this done with Simcloth?

We are using MAX4 and therefore don't have Reactor (MAX6) at our disposal.

Jon, yes, that is exactly what i want. Basically, its a corporate video shot and they want a wall comprising of 9 "bricks" that constantly change shape and affect each other. So obviously i would rather assign noise controllers to the brick sizes and let dynamis sort the rest out than do it all by hand. Can you tell me how you did that in the video you posted? Pretty please? Or if what i want done is possible....

Richard, It is Simcloth (I use MAX 4 too ) but Marc this may not work for what you described...

I think the reason that it worked for me was because I set the calculation start point to the first frame or later than of the lower box scaling down. Maybe as a more extended process you could somehow figure out how to calculate each brick separate or in groups.

Also, I just remembered something that may work the same way is a Flash script I've seen. On one of the popular Flash web sites there is a tutorial which makes a bitmap act kinda like that old PS plugin called PowerGoo. Maybe you could use the same relational math but in a maxscript form. I'm terrible at scripting but if I run across the link I'll pass it on.

Oh... one last thing is wiring. I've only used wiring on a very basic level but I would bet it can become somewhat powerful if you use the unidirectional function.

Thanks for the links Eric, Haven't seen those yet and they are good to see what Simcloth can do

Maxscripting??? Never done that before, i woudnt even know where to start. But thanks for your suggestion about wiring, ill have to think about that. I dont think it would work though. I find it hard to believe that there isnt a way to do this easily. Sighhhh.... I'll post the question on the Discreet support forum too, maybe someone knows how to do it with Reactor.

Thanks for the help though Jon, have a great weekend.
