  • Single HT or Double CPU system ???

    Hi all…

I’m having a little difficulty choosing between a Single Intel HT cpu system and a Double Intel Xenon system. ( looking up DELL systems since I’ve decided to buy the M60 Portable… so I’ll make it a package purchase )

The thing is one can get a high clock processor with HT that theoretically or practically – I don’t know – can ran as 2 processors for less then a Xenon double system with the same clock on the processors.

What I need to know is this:

Does the software need to know how to use HT… is Vray one of them and for that matter are VIZ/MAX one of them.
( does it applay for using double processors too ???)

And at the bottom line what is the most cost effective system.

I’ll appreciate your info on this.

    Thanks,
    Bakbek.

From memory, on our farm the dual 2.8 xeons on the i7505 chipset are about 30% faster than the P4 3.0's with the 875 chipset (all with HT enabled). Both systems are over 100% faster than the dual P3 1gigs on the farm. I can post more exact numbers on Monday. There is a new Xeon chipset based on the 875 chipset and supporting faster memory that should widen that gap, not sure if it is shipping yet though.
