  • Roofing - somewhat off topic

Does anyone have a tip for making spanish tile roofing?
I have found some textures that will work but I am dreading the idea
of modeling a tile then making an array, does not sound like fun.
I tried displacement but could not really get it to work well.

Any tips? Be nice to have a plug-in for stuff like this, say generic enough
to use for anything from dragon scales to roof tiles.

Can you post a photograph of what you're intending to model/render?

funny you should post this. About a month ago I did a test to see if I could do this same thing for a house rendering I never ended up doing.

It wasn't to bad in autocad but I'd hate to try it in Max. I had some problems with it at the corners but I think I know how to fix it if I ever did it for real. Modeling took about 40 mins but I'd hate to do it for a whole house. I did use a displaced shingle on the rendering I posted in the images board and it worked pretty well (vray displacement is so cool). I have to think you simulate it fairly close in the same way, except for the shadows under the tile obviously. Here's a small copy of the textures I use for that image, maybe it will get you some ideas. You guys are welcome to use them if you want.

      Good luck

Thanks Adrian, will give it a try as soon as I get back into exterior mode.
Still poking at interiors for the moment - but thinking in back burner mode
        on the exteriors.

Actually what is on the image is very simple to model..
You just draw the curve (wavy satuff) make a copy, extrude it make cups, then make copies above the others, and then when you finish one side just copy-rotate (90degree) and cut of the uneeded parts. Then you do one tile for the side-connections parts and finish. Array along curve or copy and put them as needed and you're done.
I can make it for ya because this takes really no time.

we model ours tile by tile, using slice and cap on the group afterwards if necessary...its the only way we have found them to look 1/2 decent
