  • Alternative to rendermask script

We've been having major problems with the RenderMask script lately. I'm not exactly sure why, but my guess is that it is because we are making greater use of ForestPro objects which are distributing large areas of shrubs, grass, trees etc.

Basically, you select the objects you want a matte/mask for and click 'Render Mask' on the script and it will render out a black and white matte for you. There is also lots more functionality, including reflection/environment mattes. It is quite an important step in our workflow and we find it hard/slow to be without it. In a nutshell, max just freezes when you click 'Render Mask' and doesn't recover. It seems to only happen with more complex scenes with ForestPro objects in them (though even if we hide the FP objects, the problem remains). The actual render, when it does work, takes a few seconds to complete.

Any other solutions that you guys know about?
    Kind Regards,

    Rendering Multimattes ?

We use multimattes (and they are good), but this is for situations where we need mattes over and above those created at rendertime. Also, rendermattes don't allow environment/reflection mattes.

The second one looks interesting - I'll give it a try. Thanks.
