Facing particles

I'm trying to find tutorials on doing exceptionally good camera-facing-particle smoke. Every now and then I'll see some that looks convincing (in games and such), but every time I try to make it happen myself it just ends up looking like puff-balls.

This is for thick black smoke coming out of the chimneys of civil war era riverboats.
