  • google chrome damages windows explorer

i mistakenly installed google chrome and now i cannot navigate to our ftp site via windows explorer. This means i cannot use our ftp site. I NEED to navigate through it with windows explorer. i uninstalled Google chrome but whatever it did to my computer remains. I still get the error message when i go to "Page/Open ftp site in windows explorer" that says "This ftp site cannot be viewed in windows explorer".
Any thoughts? I'm using internet explorer 8.

Filezilla is a free & professional quality FTP program. I've been using it for years with no problem.

This should work fine for you to get you going again

Sorry, that doesn't help. I'm in an office that strictly controls whats on our computers. (Which is fine with me)
"Enable ftp folder view is checked", so that's not the problem.
Plus, when i have an ftp link in an email, i am no longer able to just hit it and have explorer take me there.

solved the outlook ftp link problem (corrupted registry key) but still haven't solved "This ftp site cannot be opened in windows explorer" problem.

          EDIT:

Use FileZilla standalone from Portable Apps. Windows Exlpoler is a really lousy excuse for FTP and should have never been done in the first place.

heh, ok, ok...but in my situation that doesn't help and we've not had problems with windows IE and it has worked extremely well until it was corrupted by Chrome installation.

IT people are not very nice people at times.....lol & of course they know everything & they hold onto their power like meglamaniacs.

If your IT person was so smart...why did he instal chrome with out fully testing it????? Filezilla is FREE & it WORKS perfectly without crashing.... then why won't they instal it???

I was recently in the same position at a company where the IT guy thought he was a policeman.....lol Remind him/her that they are there to SUPPORT you. Not to tell you what to do.

              Cheers

I run Chrome, and my Internet Explorer works fine.

This is exactly why these computers are locked down in the first place. To keep people from installing random software, and creating problems that then have to be resolved. In this case the problem is only IE, rather than a third party malicious malware. Just the same though, it is a problem.

Have you tried logging in under a different account? If there is a problem with IE functioning like a basic FTP program, then it is probably tied to your account settings. If it is, then logging in under a different username may take care of that.

But the easiest way is going to be to phone your IT guy, tell him what ou did, and he will come and fix it.

Here is the solution to Chrome damaging IE. See dialogue below.

Person 1. "Chrome is an open source application, it cannot corrupt any windows components, the only thing changed is the behavior and functionality which can be overtaken by chrome"

Me. "Ok, so how do i correct the behavior and functionality that has been "overtaken" even though chrome has been uninstalled? IE8 and Outlook worked fine until Chrome was installed. (Once it became apparent that Chrome had "overtaken" IE8, it was uninstalled)"

Person 2. "It's amazing that I just found this thread. One of my users is having the same issue with IE8. I have completely reset IE8 on the Advanced tab (Delete Personal Settings was checked) and nothing changes. If I manually type the ftp address into the address bar of Windows Explorer it opens up the site in IE.
I have had so many issues with Chrome that I have gone to the extreme of completely blocking it from being installed. I don't particularly mind it taking over all the associations when it installs, but I would appreciate it if it set them back to they way it found them when uninstalled. As of now, it just drops the associations and leaves the user to figure everything out. Very annoying. Done with my rant, sorry."

Person 2."It turns out to be a registry issue. I fixed it by exporting the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ftp key from a computer that works fine and importing it into the broken one. Make sure to back up the registry on the broken computer first and that you only do the ftp key."

Me. "Worked perfectly. Thank you very much."
