    How can this stuff happen in realtime without memory being used, while I'm waiting 15min for the caustics to calculate, the system almost stalls, and then they are noisy?

      They are fake caustics (based on the water surface curvature); it probably won't be too hard to implement something similar that affects the opacity of the water surface for shadow rays...
