  • .hdr files for editing.

im loving exrs for really nice post effects etc, but im working remotely to my clients, and the renderfarm i use, so their sheer size makes them a pain for me to shift around over the net. ive been testing using .hdr files, as they are significantly smaller, also 32 bit float format. on projects where i dont need render elements, they cut huge amounts off the time i wait for my frames to be delivered.

however.. Aftereffects cs4 seems to -hate- them. they look just fine, but rendering or previewing takes about 15 seconds a frame, on a 3.8 i7 with 24 gig of ram and a pair of ssd's in raid 0... its obviously not read speed that is the issue, but the cpu never uses more than one core. ive enabled "multiprocessing" in AE, which loads multiple instances for rendering, but it doesnt seem to make a spot of difference (in fact cpu still seems to use only 1 core).

is this specific to hdr's or 32 bit AE work in general? anyone else used hdrs in a post package? ...

i should probably just play around with the compression options in the exr save dialogue... any advice there?
