There is now program that directly uses the raw data. Most of them internaly use the dcraw toolkit to convert the files.
Everytime I tried that the result of Lightroom or the canon tools were much better.
By flattening the images (removing any color correction) you don't loose that much information like you think and because you have more than one exposure it does not matter anyway. There where an image is burned out you have the missing information in the next lower exposure.
Regarding the backplates I still have to train me to shoot better images. It is difficult when there is no object in the frame.
Also I've noticed that there is a aaa 360 lens on market now, but its not 180 vertical / which U can get by just twisting camera 180%... have a look at it maybe it will help u out ! But then u only need Hassi with 60 megapixels to get 10k hdri hehe
Hehe I am pretty happy with my equipment now. The only thing that I might buy some time might be the canon 1D. Either the current mark IV or the announced mark X.
Those are a dream for hdr photography.
