Does anybody have any resources for pricing work. It seems we are all over the board, and we get what we can, without any clear guidelines. I have been doing some per diem pricing, but basically I am guessing. I am currently looking at an interior loft rendering, that might take me a day to model, a day to texture, and a day to tweak and do post. So, let's say I am estimating three days worth of work. Is this a good methodology, or am I off with my thinking? I think people hire for more than just the end deliverable, they hire based on personality and value, too! What is that worth? I know people that you couldn't pay me to work with, and others I would work with for peanuts.

Your methodology sounds good to me. I estimate the work pretty much the same way. I just take the amount of hours I think it will take to complete a job and multiply by my hourly rate. I also add about 10%-15% on top of that estimate to cover for any revisions and other back and forth there may be. Also, there are some guides you have to clear with the client, on how much you are willing to do before you have to charge an overage. Also I must point out that the $ amount I charge is quite high, that serves two purposes: one to detract those who are cheap, and two to protect you and your work. If your client is not willing to pay you well, then to me its not worth the hassle in the first place. Regretfully, this has a negative effect of being unemployed for long periods of time

I use a flat fee, x amount for the 1st view and x/3 per additonal view of the same scene.. it works great to me because in this way hardly ever the clients want only want one view.
I ask first when they want the renderings, if they say in a week, I finish it in two- three days I send them the 5th day.. if you send it earlier, they have more days to do their " minor changes" and they also have time to calculate how much money you made per day.... in my opinion, you don't have to be punished because you work fast and efficient.

after finish the jobs, and I calculate my ratio, sometimes I'm in $70-100/ hr and in others $ 400-700 hr, so one project compensates the other ones.

Flat fees also make easier for the client to go ahead with the project.

oh ya, the taxes. Do you just add the tax, to your quote, or do you specify taxes? Example:

              $1300 or $1000 + 30% tax

Since it's not a sales tax I don't think you should add it as a specific item to the total. At least that's how I handle it.
                www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.

I usually keep 35% of what I make in the bank, for tax time. I also spend a lot of money, back into the company, which helps. The U.S. really allow the small business a lot of wiggle room.

I am there about $50.00 per hour. One client tells me I am to cheap and should be charging around $65.00 per hour. I would love to make $400.00 per hour

If you work fast, flat fee is better for you...your clients don't need to know have much they are paying per hour... so your ratio change all the time, but it's up to you to keep it high.
