I always stay away from saving movies in MPEG formats for two reasons:

    1) "Target bitrate" -How the hell should I know??
    2) "Maximum bitrate" - Why would I want to put limits on how awesome something can look?

Does anyone know the ins and outs of this stuff?

    Thanks.

The target is what it will attempt to hit. Maximum will specify the highest the bitrate _can_ go. For pretty decent videos I do Target 6500, maximum 9000 (9mb/s). The higher they are the more data you're asking the processor to decode (because it's a compressed format) and the hd to stream out. Most modern processors and hds won't have any problem with 10,000. I'm no expert on this, it's just what I've picked up dealing with them for a while.
