  • 3 Tb

I just ordered my final business expense of the year: a 3-terabyte external hard drive.

Hope I get enough awesome work to fill that sucker up quickly.

Let's see... Peter Jackson is currently filming The Hobbit at 4k resolution, at 48 frames per second in 3D. If that becomes the standard... that's 202 Mb of un-compressed floating 32-bit stereo images per frame, so... one second is 9.7 Gb... so... 3 Tb is about 5 minutes of one-pass 32-bit stereo video -Peter Jackson style.

Depending on the actual framing used a frame might be even more then that in uncompressed...on the other hand there is no 32bit uncompressed camera...but then again...you need more than a single raw pass...aaaargh. Anyways. 3TB sounds like it would fill ridiculously fast depending on the type of work you do. And agreed with
DADAL. Backup is a bitch with growing storage at times hehe.

I made that calculation based on saving a single uncompressed EXR file.

I've always been just one guy with just enough work to scrape by. It's only been in the past year + that I've finally had a few projects at HD res, and I figure this will last me about 2 years at the current rate. I still don't even have a render farm, but I know a guy who's so insanely reasonably priced that there's no way I'm posting his info here.

you have to factor in also if you have cg in the shot, then typically each frame will have somewhere between 5-25 passes also in float, where each will be around 100-200 mb

Remember the days when 640x480 was good enough for most things? This sh*t never ends....

Also consider that some stereo displays need 15 to 21 camera views, not just two...
