  • Epson Inkjet printer problem w/streaking ink-- yes, totally unrelated to rendering...

I have a problem with my inkjet printer (Epson Artisan 810), and I really don't know where to ask for help. Since people on this forum are quite knowledgeable and helpful, I decided to post here.

I have had an Epson Artisan 810 for a few years. I've been using refillable cartridges for most of this time. Everything was working just fine until recently when the cyan ink began acting strangely. If I print a nozzle check, the middle set of horizontal "stripes" for the Cyan region is faded away, and there is also a vertical cyan streak running down the right side of the paper (about 1/3 of the way in from right edge). When I print images, I get vertical streaking sometimes and there are large horizontal bands where there is no cyan ink.

I don't think it's necessarily related to ink on the roller, at least not entirely, because if I print on CDs I get a strange cyan smudge in one spot and I can't imagine CDs contact the rollers at all.

I have run head cleaning cycles but it does not resolve the problem. Can anyone tell me what is going on? Is it something that can be fixed, or is the printer junk at this point?

It seems like either the printhead is damaged and/or the cartridge is leaking, but I don't know enough about the innards of these things to know definitively. I've tried posting on FixYa and Fixyourownprinter and I've gotten no responses at either place. That's how I ended up here. If nobody has an idea, maybe someone can at least point me to another site or forum where I can fins some answers. I have found surprising little information related to printer repair on the 'net.

    Thank you.
