  • Need advice: RAM for Dual CPU board

    Hi guys,

    the question is very basic.
When equiping the dual CPU mobo with RAM....if i want to have a 24GB RAM....do i have to equip both CPUs with 24GB RAM or is 2x12 for each enough?
In another words....is the RAM shared by both or not?
Dont want to hit the problem when i equip it with 2x12 and it would max out at 12...if you know what i mean...

Thanks for your reply and help!

as far as I understand it is collectively used. Just like your cpu's will be collectively used with multithreaded applications. For example if between the 2 cpu's you have lets say 16 cores, then whatever is being processed uses lets say 6 cores and they need 20GB ram to do what is needed, then the remaining 10 cores is left with 4GB.
    That's just my understanding
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

bummer...llooks like my dual hex is getting maxxed out at 12GB of memory!!! although i have 24GB onboard
does this mean that the memory is not being shared BUT it allocated 12GB to each processor?

That would be very odd as memory is shared between processors. What is the size of your swap file? It must be at least as large as the amount of RAM that you have.

I still use the formula they recommended way back with AutoCAD 14 for having your swap file 4 times as large as your RAM

Hmm got Lenovo Thinkstation D series and my authorized supplier told me the mem is not shared :-// was rendering a scene with displacemennt and i could not even move the mouse when the scene was rendering and swapping when it exceeded 12GB. Even when i had the swap no enabled then provided the mem is shared, it should not be swapping at all or no?
